Salamonie Lake features Purdue Extension speaker at Senior Luncheon on Friday, Sept. 11
The Senior Luncheon will be held at noon, Sept. 11 at the Salamonie Lake Interpretive Center, located in Lost Bridge West SRA. Anyone age 50 or older is welcome to attend to hear guest speaker John Woodmancy from Purdue Extension with “Top Ten Ways to Kill a Tree!”
Woodmancy has enjoyed a 30-year career as an Extension Educator. He is a Northeast Indiana Regional Educator – Natural Resources. His presentation will highlight best management practices to keep trees healthy.
The program begins with a carry-in meal at noon, chili soup provided. Guests should bring a side dish to share, a beverage, and their table service. A donation will be accepted to help defray costs.

The program with Upper Wabash Interpretive Services is located at 3691 New Holland Road, Andrews, 46702. Gate fees do apply when the entrance is staffed. $7 per Indiana vehicle, $50 for annual entrance permit to all Indiana State Parks or $25 permit for those 65 or over.

Video games have come a long way from the pixelated images of early offerings like Pac-Man. The 3D computer graphics developed in the 90s have resulted in increasingly realistic looking characters and worlds. We'll look at how technology has allowed video game art to evolve over the years and explore some of the most iconic games to show up on consoles, computers, and devices. We'll wrap things up by creating our own unique video game characters and spend time playing 12 different arcades!

NMPL is hosting a new Mahjong Mornings program to provide time for open play! Mahjong is a strategic tile-based game originating in 19th-century China, played by 3–4 people, combining skill, strategy, and luck. Beginners are welcome to come play on a set provided by the library, or bring your own tiles and friends for a competitive round!

Preschool-age children and their adults are invited to Salamonie’s “Autumn” program on Sept. 17. Children will explore what makes autumn a wonderful time of year. Children ages 2 – 5 and their adults are welcome to attend the class from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Salamonie Interpretive Center located in Lost Bridge West SRA, Andrews. Each program is designed to enhance the preschooler’s basic education, including music, crafts, social interaction, and time outdoors, always with a nature-related theme. The program fee is $3 per child. Advance registration is requested. Register by calling Upper Wabash Interpretive Services at (260) 468-2127. When the entrance gate is open at Salamonie Lake, gate fees apply - $7 per Indiana vehicle or $50 for an annual permit to all State Parks.

Army Guy and Red Cross Gal: World War II Through the Eyes of Two Small-Town Hoosiers Author, Barbara Olenyik Morrow, tells the story of Bill Husselman and Mary Brandon, young people from Auburn, Indiana. Morrow’s program will track Bill and Mary’s overseas paths – as Allied forces fought at Anzio and Monte Cassino, liberated Rome, crossed the English Channel, swept across France, prevailed at the Battle of the Bulge, and drove deep into Germany’s heartland.

When the sun goes down, the library lights up. Crisp air, warm lights, and the scent of seasonal treats drifting through the stacks. NMPL’s Night Market returns for its fifth year, adding in a special twist: The library is staying open later to accommodate the glowing, special marketplace filled with handcrafted goods, comforting flavors, and the creative spirit of our community!

Learn a practical life skill at this session of Homeschool Home Ec! Students will explore how simple ingredients can be combined to create a nourishing, vegan lip balm that supports everyday self‑care.

Participants will make their own Vanilla Mint Lip Balms using a blend of olive oil, coconut oil, and agave extract - a moisturizing combination that helps keep lips hydrated. The balms are scented with Vanilla Mint, a sweet mix of peppermint candy, anise, and warm vanilla notes. Students will learn how each ingredient works, how to melt and combine the oils, and how to safely pour and set their finished balm.

This program encourages creativity, independence, and confidence while showing students how easy it can be to make useful products at home. Each participant will leave with their own personalized lip balm and all supplies are provided by the library. Come ready to learn!
