5 Spots for Nature Enthusiasts in Wabash County

Spring has sprung (cliché I know)! It’s time to turn off the movie marathon and bust out our hiking boots. Wabash County has an abundance of public trails to explore whether you like a nice leisurely stroll or a more challenging climb there’s a trail calling your name.

 

Asherwood Nature Preserve is located at 7496 W State Road 124, Wabash, IN 46992. This property is an ACRES Land Trust property, This hike is listed as a more challenging hike as it is listed as a 4/5 in difficulty. The property is just over 160 acres with 2.4 miles of designated trail. Asherwood Nature Preserve has deep ravines and boasts over 300 species of woody and herbaceous plants. 

 

 

 

 

Kokiwanee is located at 5825 E 50 S, Lagro, IN 46941. Kokiwanee is also an ACRES Land Trust property. This 1.7-mile loop winds through the forest to a waterfall, with river sounds and spring wildflowers along the way. Expect some mud after rain and a few roots to watch for.

 

Salamonie Lake is located at 9214 W Lost Bridge West Andrews. Salamonie has dozens of trails and hiking spots along with camping, fishing, and boating. All trails vary in length and difficulty so make sure you do your research as to not get stuck on a trail that is to hard.

Not much for hiking but just want to go fro a leisurely stroll? Check out Harters Grove in North Manchester. Named after The Harter family who were some of the pioneers of North Manchester, this quaint little woods located next to Warvel Park is a great spot for an afternoon picnic. After your stroll through the woods enjoy the man made waterfall at the North end of Warvel Park.

 

The Wabash River Trail that connects Wabash to Lagro with a paved walking and biking path. Offers a great safe space away from traffic to enjoy a scenic bike ride or a relaxing place to get your steps in. The trail is 7 miles however there is no need to do the entire trail. Be sure to look for Eagles nesting in trees along the River Trail.

 

Do you prefer to get your nature fix from a canoe or kayak? Pack your cooler and launch away from  canoe/kayak launch in North Manchester located at Ogan’s Landing. Ogan’s Landing features a parking area large enough for vehicles with trailers, handicapped accessible restrooms, and picnic tables. Check out the full list of boat access sites HERE.
