How the Wabash County Fellowship Program Transformed My Career Path

By: 2024 Wabash County Fellow

When I applied to the Wabash County Fellowship Program, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. It promised an immersive, memorable experience, but I didn’t realize just how much it would impact my future. Now, looking back, I can confidently say it was a turning point in my life—personally, professionally, and even emotionally.

Diving Into Real Work
From day one, I was treated as more than just an intern. My role wasn’t about fetching coffee or sitting on the sidelines. Instead, I was assigned meaningful projects that had a direct impact on the organization I worked for.

I spent my summer working with a local company, managing multiple projects. It was challenging at times—I had to balance tight deadlines, adapt to unexpected changes, and communicate effectively with people from all walks of life. But those challenges taught me more than any classroom ever could. I left with new technical skills, a stronger work ethic, and the confidence to know I could handle real responsibilities.

Building Connections That Matter
The Wabash County Fellowship Program wasn’t just about work. It was also about connections—meeting people who have been shaping the community for years and those, like me, who were just starting to make their mark.

Throughout the summer, we attended networking events, workshops, and even casual get-togethers where I met local leaders, mentors, and fellow interns. These connections weren’t superficial. They were genuine relationships with people who cared about my success and future. One of my mentors from the program still checks in on me, offering advice and encouragement whenever I need it.

Learning the Soft Skills No One Talks About
It’s easy to overlook how much personal growth happens in a program like this. Beyond technical know-how, I learned how to communicate effectively, work on a team, and adapt to whatever came my way.

For example, during a critical project presentation, I had to explain my ideas to an audience of business owners who all had different perspectives. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it also prepared me for the realities of working in diverse environments.

Giving Back to the Community
What stood out the most, though, was the program’s connection to the community. I wasn’t just working; I was part of something bigger. From volunteering at local events to brainstorming ways to improve Wabash County’s future, I felt like I was making a difference.

This wasn’t just fulfilling—it was memorable. I’ll always look back on those moments with pride, knowing I contributed to a community that welcomed me with open arms.

My Future Looks Different Now
When I started this program, I wasn’t entirely sure what my career would look like. Now, I have clarity. The hands-on experience, the relationships I built, and the lessons I learned have all prepared me for the next steps in my journey.

Whether I return to Wabash County someday or take these lessons elsewhere, this experience has left a lasting impression on me. The Wabash County Fellowship Program didn’t just give me a summer job—it gave me a foundation to build a meaningful career.
