Reviving Community Spirit: LaFontaine is Bringing Neighbors Together
By: Maria Smyth
In the small town of LaFontaine, Indiana, where history meets heart, something powerful is happening. Through grassroots energy and a shared love for their hometown, a group of dedicated residents formed the LaFontaine Community Alliance (LACA). LACA is working on restoring connection, pride, and purpose for the community.

Block Parties with a Purpose
At the heart of their efforts are the block parties, a simple and joyful events that have become a powerful tool for building momentum and a stronger community. But these events aren’t just fun evenings with music and lemonade. They’re part of a larger vision, one that includes becoming a recognized Main Street Affiliate with the Indiana Office of Community Rural Affairs (OCRA).
Main Street is a statewide designation that brings resources, guidance, and recognition to small towns working to revitalize their downtown districts.
The Road to Main Street Recognition
LACA understands that real change begins with relationships. Hosting block parties in the heart of LaFontaine gives neighbors a chance to come together, enjoy each other’s company, and rediscover what makes their town special.
From food trucks and lawn games to local vendors and live music, these gatherings create an inviting space where residents of all ages feel welcome and connected.
“It’s about more than having fun,” says Maria Smyth, President of LACA, resident and business owner in LaFontaine. “It’s about bringing people together, so they feel invested, so they remember that this is our town, and it matters.”
The momentum built through these events directly supports LACA’s work toward the Main Street Affiliate network, which recognizes communities that are actively working to strengthen their downtowns through place-making, historic preservation, economic growth, and civic engagement.

Small Changes, Big Impact
For LaFontaine, achieving this designation is more than a title, it’s a step toward long-term revitalization. The LACA team is already aligning with Main Street’s four-point approach: organizing volunteers, promoting the town, improving public spaces, and supporting local business development. The block parties are part of the “Promotion” component, showcasing what’s vibrant and positive about the community.
These efforts have already yielded visible results. Downtown storefronts are spruced up, flowerpots line the sidewalks in warmer months, and community events are gaining more participation. Local businesses, like Eclectic Shoppe, play a central role by offering unique goods along with their support and space for community planning and creativity.
Building Bridges Across Generations
The LACA’s block parties serve another important purpose and that’s inclusion. People who’ve lived in LaFontaine all their lives mix with newcomers. Kids play together, older residents catch up with longtime friends, and business owners connect with potential customers. These moments of shared experience help bridge generations and backgrounds, reinforcing a sense of shared identity.
“Community isn’t just something that happens,” says another Alliance member. “You have to build it, nurture it, and keep showing up for it. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

A Vision for the Future
As LACA continues working toward a Main Street designation, they remain focused on what they do best, bringing people together and celebrating LaFontaine’s potential. Through small, consistent efforts like the block parties, they’re proving that even modest actions can spark meaningful change.
In a world where disconnection often feels like the norm, the LaFontaine Community Alliance is bringing back something timeless: neighbors knowing neighbors, stories being shared, and a town coming back to life not through big investments, but through shared commitment and hometown heart.
With each block party, flowerpot, and handshake, LaFontaine takes one more step toward the thriving, connected community it’s meant to be.
