Jennifer’s Guide to Winter in Lagro
By: Jennifer Long-Dillon

- For a warm, delish breakfast, Station 1 Firehouse Cafe nails the classics, think biscuits and gravy and those gooey homemade cinnamon rolls.
- Park at the downtown Wabash River Trail lot. The 7-mile path between Lagro and Wabash serves up peaceful river views and photo-worthy stops. In mid-winter, golden light hits around 8 – 9 AM and 4:20 – 5:20 PM. Fresh snow brightens everything.
- About 8–10 minutes from downtown Lagro, Kissing Falls at Kokiwanee Nature Preserve brings snow-dusted drama. Enjoy a short, scenic hike to a cascade that often freezes into a glittering ice curtain (pure winter magic). Trails can be slick, so traction helps.

A beautiful photo of the Kissing Falls Waterfall - Hopewell House is a restored community gem. Snap a porch pic, admire the details, and when open, step inside. In winter, lamplit windows and a snow-dusted roof make it a picture-perfect stop.
- Dover Street Barn is Lagro’s Street Market, think fresh bake goods, handmade gifts, vintage finds, winter produce, and rotating food vendors—and home base for the Lagro Canal Foundation. Local tip: If you spot a board member, ask for a quick tour.
- History hits hard at Kerr Lock, where the preserved Wabash & Erie Canal Lock reminds us of Irish laborers hand-digging hundreds of miles by shovel in the 1800s.

- Staying over? Choose Riparian House for a quiet, stylish retreat near downtown or the Airbnb at The Hive.

Bonus Pick-Me-Up: The 950 Speakeasy Bistro offers the quintessential speakeasy-dark ambience and cocktail-forward nightcaps, slow-sipped bourbon, stirred classics, or a silky espresso. On weekends, it’s karaoke Fridays and live-music Saturdays.

WHY IT’S SPECIAL!
Lagro offers the best of both worlds, scenic landscapes and a community that genuinely cares. It’s a safe, welcoming place where neighbors support neighbors, and there’s a real sense of momentum and possibility.
WHAT I LOVE!
Lagro has many things to do in the winter. One of my favorites is hiking in the snow on many of the trails in the area.
