From Internships to Careers: How the Wabash County Fellowship Program Builds Meaningful Connections

By: 2024 Wabash County Fellowship Program Employer

When I first agreed to host a fellow from the Wabash County Fellowship Program, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Sure, the promise of fresh ideas and eager talent sounded great, but little did I know just how impactful the experience would be—not just for the fellow, but for my organization and me as an employer.

The Wabash County Fellowship Program is more than just an internship. It’s a bridge, connecting motivated college juniors and seniors with local businesses and organizations. For employers, it’s an opportunity to foster talent, provide real-world experience, and perhaps, build long-term professional relationships.

Here’s how our involvement transformed not only our operations but also helped a fellow launch their career:

Talent with a Purpose

The program attracts bright, driven individuals who are serious about making an impact. Our fellow didn’t just “shadow” the team—they brought fresh perspectives to ongoing projects, contributed innovative ideas, and executed their work with enthusiasm.

One project, in particular, stood out: the introduction of a tech solution.  Their work had a direct impact on our outcomes, showcasing their potential as a valuable team member.

Building Connections

The program’s structure encouraged collaboration beyond our workplace. Fellows network with other local leaders, attend workshops and engage with the community. This not only gave our fellows a comprehensive view of career opportunities in Wabash County but also helped them establish relationships that will serve them for years to come.

For us, it was an opportunity to connect with the next generation of professionals, many of whom could be future employees or collaborators.

Mentorship That Matters

One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting a fellow was the opportunity to mentor. Sharing industry knowledge, helping them navigate challenges, and watching their confidence grow was immensely satisfying.

As an employer, mentoring also reminded me of why I chose this career path in the first place. It reignited my passion and gave me a renewed appreciation for the work we do here in Wabash County.

A Pathway to Careers

For our fellow, the internship wasn’t just a summer experience; it was a springboard. After completing the program, they gained clarity about their career path and have remained in communication with the team after returning to school.

A Win-Win for Wabash County

The Fellowship Program isn’t just about individual growth; it’s about strengthening the local economy. By fostering relationships between businesses and talented young professionals, it creates pathways for retaining talent and ensuring Wabash County continues to thrive.

For any business considering hosting a fellow, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s an investment in the future—of your organization, of young talent, and of Wabash County itself.

By opening your doors, sharing your expertise, and embracing the energy and ideas of these fellows, you’re not just shaping careers—you’re shaping the future of our community.
