For teens who have experienced trauma, time spent at the water’s edge offers stillness, patience, and a sense of calm. As casting and waiting helps regulate the nervous system and reduce anxiety, it also helps build confidence and self-esteem as students develop a skill, experience small victories, and take pride in their accomplishments. Perhaps most importantly, it provides a peaceful, low-pressure environment where meaningful connections can form between peers, between a student and family teacher, and between a young person and nature.
