SUMMARY:Ancestral Knowledge: Fire by Friction Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Fire by friction is an ancient human art and skill that has been a critical component of our survival as species. In this ancestral fire making skills workshop\, students will get to know some of the plant allies that are necessary to fire making. There will be a discussion of the fire triangle and different primitive methods for making fire. Participants will walk the library grounds and gather plant material that can be used for tinder. \nLed by Amos Rodriguez\, Season 7 contestant from the History Channel’s survival series Alone and cofounder of Nourish Indiana\, this is an amazing opportunity to learn an important ancient skill from an expert woodsman. Amós will demonstrate a hand drill and bow drill and participants will have a chance to use flint and steel strikers and bow drills made from local wood. \nThe workshop is offered free of charge to the community thanks to the sponsorship of the Community Foundation of Wabash County’s Good Deeds Grant. Put down your phone\, pick up a book\, and spend quality time with fellow book lovers – no homework or chit chat required! \nBring the book (and beverage) of your choice to the library for a quiet hour of reading in peace. (You can also choose a book from the library shelves!) We’ll have cozy blankets and comfortable seating for all attendees. Colored lanyards will be available for participants to wear\, to help indicate who is down for some book chit chat and who is not. (Red lanyards = Please let me read in silence; Green lanyards = Let’s talk a little bit.) \nKnown as the introvert’s happy hour\, NMPL’s Silent Book Club is the perfect place to retreat with your book for a designated hour of reading.
