Hathaway Preserve at Ross RunHathaway Preserve at Ross Run

Hathaway Preserve at Ross Run is a spectacular gorge with waterfalls, reef fossils, exposed bedrock and vertical cliffs as high as 75 feet. On this terrain are mature oaks, some with trunks over four feet in diameter, as well as a diverse understory beneath the oaks and a spectacular display of spring wildflowers.

The Ross Run gorge is an impressive natural feature with uncommonly high geological, ecological and aesthetic values. The preserve features a 2 mile hiking trail of moderate difficulty.

139.5 Acres:  Kokiwanee features bluffs along the Salamonie River and streams tumbling down waterfalls to flow into the river. This is a place of many species of trees; wildflowers, including snow trillium; and many birds from wood ducks on the river to great blue herons wading where the water is shallow, and many woodland species.

A 5-mile loop of trails helps you to have a long or short walk with views of the river and several small waterfalls. Everyone loves highlighting their tour with a stop at Kissing Falls in the southeast corner of the property.

Mary Thornton PreserveMary Thornton Nature Preserve

15 Acres: This preserve was acquired the preserve through a generous bargain sale from Robin & Mary Lemberger. The preserve is 15 acres of oak hickory forest that is converting itself into a beech maple forest. The understory is native and diverse and the property contains ephemeral wetlands that provide great amphibian habitat and breeding areas. Even though the property is relatively small, wildlife is abundant.

The preserve offers an easy .5 mile hiking trail.

Salamonie Lake and Salamonie River State Forest comprise a total of 13,336 acres.  At summer pool the water forms a 2,665 acre lake.  The property also boasts sixty ponds, marshes, and wetlands.  Surrounded by the rich countryside of North Central Indiana, Salamonie Lake and the surrounding area have a lot to offer those seeking information on Indiana’s pioneer history.  Learn about towns under water, Indiana legends and more.  Roam the Salamonie River State Forest, the largest state forest in northern Indiana.

All trails are signed according to their suggested use. Trails wind in and out of woods and clearings, following pond perimeters and the reservoir boundary. Please observe and abide by trail signs. Hikers, bikers, horsemen, mushroom hunters, and other patrons are urged to wear hunter orange during hunting seasons. No motorized vehicles allowed other than snowmobiles when the trail is open with 4 inches of snow or more.

Salamonie Reservoir/Lake is a treasure with nature at it's finest. Campers, hikers, bikers, horsemen, fishers, hunters, snowmobilers all benefit from all that it has to offer.

Horseback riders can enjoy approximately 15 miles of wooded trails that offer views of waterfalls, rocky gorges, and flowing rivers and streams.  A 15-site Horsemen’s primitive campground with hitching rails on each site is available for those camping with horses.

160 Acres.  Deep ravines divide beech/maple and oak/hickory forests on narrow ridge tops. Over 300 species of woody and herbaceous plants and 140 species of birds have been observed.

Divided by Asher Creek and flanked by wetlands, the preserve includes three diverse ponds and three types of trails: paved; wide and flat earthen trails; and narrow, winding trails climbing steep grades.  2.6 mile walking trail, moderate difficulty.  The center has an aviary for injured birds and a nature center.
